Internship Opportunities

Position Description

These positions can be 3 month to 1 year in duration. Interns will receive training in the following aspects of wholesale nursery production: container production, potting soil mixing, plant cultural care, integrated pest management, shipping, plant propagation, grafting techniques, plant winter storage, field production/B&B, field production bare root, field cultural care, greenhouse construction, and office management practices.

Company location and facilities

Decker's Nursery is located about 5 miles southeast of Columbus, near the suburb of Groveport, Ohio. The nursery is within 15 minutes drive of downtown Columbus and the Ohio State University. Housing is readily available close to the nursery or in a furnished house located on the nursery property.

The Nursery has about 25 acres of container and propagation greenhouse facilities. The structures are new and unique in design with an emphasis on labor efficiency. The field production is on a 108-acre farm located adjacent to the container nursery. This field location was purchased in 1999 and has about 50 acres planted.

The qualifications for a successful intern are enthusiasm for learning and an interest in the horticultural business. We will strive to provide a hands on learning experience that not only teaches the "how", but also explains the "why". An internship in a diverse wholesale nursery such as ours offers skills in the cultural care of plants that can prove priceless to students in related fields, such as landscape design/maintenance or retail sales.
